Method 1: Prepping the Furniture & Work space

  1. Drop Cloth & Open Windows: The first step is to keep your old antique furniture on a waterproof tarp or drop cloth. This will help you to protect your floor while painting the furniture. Use a face mask and open the windows and fans (if available) of your working area because the fumes of paint are dangerous for health.
  2. Remove, Strip & Fill: If any hardware is installed on your demode furniture then remove it before following the next steps. Strip your furniture if you are going to stain it.
  3. Stripping Wood Process: Simply apply wood stripper on your furniture surface and leave it for 15-20 seconds then use a coarse cloth or steel wool to wipe it away. If you are not going for a staining process then leave it. Fill any scratches and holes in your furniture with wood putty and smooth it and then let it dry for a few minutes.
  4. Sand & Wipe: Now, sand the surface which you want to paint by using the 150 grit sandpaper. After you complete your sanding work then wipe the dust with a tack cloth.
  5. Coat Primer & Sand: Choose the primer according to your wood, and apply a base coat of it. Leave it for a few hours, then sand the wood again with 220 grit sandpaper.

Method 2: Painting the First Coat

  1. Stir, Dip & Apply Acrylic Paint: Stir the acrylic paint by using a paint stick and then dip your brush in the paint and push it on the side of the paint can to remove extra paint. Now, apply your paint in light and even coat and follow the wood grain. If you see any paint drip then wipe it instantly.
  2. Dry: After following every step carefully, now leave your furniture to dry totally for 6-8 hours.
