Two Easy Methods And Items Needed To Adjust The Garaged Door To Close Tighter

If you see that your garage door is too tight to close and you don't know how to fix this issue then don't think too much about it because we are here to help you. If you want to adjust your garage door then you need to collect all the given items and then follow all the steps. Here is the list of required items and steps for this process:

Things You Will Need

  • Stepladder
  • Open-End Wrench
  • Two-By-Four
  • Handsaw
  • Work Gloves

Method 1: Extension Springs

  1. Firstly close your garage door before placing your stepladder in the area of your automatic opener. Unplug the power cord to your opener. Next, you need to pull down on the necessity release cord to disengage your door from your opener’s track.
  2. Next you need to lift up your door halfway from its inside by using one of the cross members. If your door remains at the halfway area without compensation then the tension is correct fully. If your door lowers on its own then your door tension is too loose. It's too tight if it raises beyond halfway without compensation.
  3. Open your door fully by hand. Cut a 2/4 brace that installs horizontally at the outer edge of your door, using a handsaw. Position the brace in place at the outer edge of the door.
  4. Next you need to move your stepladder to the area of an expansion spring at the upper end of your door at the track on 1 side. Loosen the lock nut on your interweave adjuster stem at the outermost end of your pulley & spring assembly by using an open-end wrench.
  5. Now you need to tighten the adjuster 3 full turns clockwise to add tension if the door closed & did not remain open halfway. Loosen the adjuster 3 turns levorotatory if your door raised without compensation. Repeat all the same arrangement at the pulley & the spring adjuster on its opposite track.
  6. Hold the outer edge of your door open with one hand & remove the 2/4 brace. Lower your door halfway & test the tension. Repeat these steps if needed until your door remains open halfway.
  7. Lower your door by your hand. Pull the disengage cord to re-engage the closer. Plugin your power cord to your automatic opener.

Method 2: Hinge Springs

  1. First of all, you need to disconnect your door from your automatic opener by using the disconnect cord. Move to the outside of your garage.
  2. Next you need to raise your door using its handle on the outside. If the door is too hard to raise then the tension at the hinge springs is too loose and your automatic closer will be too hard to raise your door.
  3. If your door raises too speedily then the tension is too tight and your automatic opener will work too hard to close your door.
  4. Open your door fully to alleviate the tension on the hinge springs at each side of your garage door opening. Install a vertical 2/4 brace at the outer edge of the door to avert your door from falling closed when the springs are adjusted.
  5. Ask an assistant to help adjust the tension on your springs.
  6. Put work gloves on your hand. Start at your hinge & spring at one side of the door opening. Note the link in your anchor chain where the hook at the lower end of the spring is connected, like 2nd or 3rd link from the upper end of your chain.
  7. Grip your spring with both hands & pull down so the assistant will disengage the anchor chain from the hook at spring lower end.
  8. Pull downward on the spring and reattach the hook at the lower end of the spring at the next link down the chain to increase the tension of the spring. Reattach the hook at the next link up to loosen the tension. Repeat the same step with the hinge & spring at the opposite side of your door.
  9. Next hold your door open & then remove the brace. Finally, you need to reattach your door at the opener track using your disconnect cord.
