How To Adjust A Binding Folding Door: Easy Process Of Adjusting A Binding Folding Door

Easy Process Of Adjusting A Binding Folding Door

Bifold doors are common on closet openings, due to the fact that a pair of the doors can protect the 5-foot-wide door opening without the obtrusion & interference into the living space that a pair of conventional partition doors would require. When properly adjusted, bifold doors can be opened easily and stay in their tracks properly. If your folding doors are not easy to open as well as close, you can adjust a binding door in a short span of time in order to make sure that they open and close easily.

Adjusting Door Alignment

  • Open & Close Each Half Of Bifold Door: Open as well as close each half of the bifold door & at the same time watch how the door lines up with the door frame in order to see whether it binds with the edge of the door frame or not or rubs through the top rail or bottom edge on the floor. Check the pivot pin on the underside of the door in order to make sure that the pin is properly seated into the bracket.
  • Lock The Hinge Into Position: Now, open the bifold door by loosening the set screw on the top of the pivoting hinge, and push or pull the door within the hinge bracket as long as the edge of the door has an even reveal through the door frame. Tighten the set screw in order to lock the hinge into position. Repeat the same procedure with the opposite side of the door.
  • Check Each Reveal Through The Frame: Close both doors and test each reveal through the frame in order to find out whether both doors close as well as line up evenly in the center of the door opening. If the reveal on one of the doors is even but too wide, calculate & compute the width of the reveal and subtract 1/16 inch from that calculation. Open the door and raise up on the hinge side in order to pull out the hinge pin from the bottom hinge bracket & then angle the door toward the room and pull the door out of the upper hinge and track. Loosen the underside hinge mount screw and move the bottom hinge pin mount smoothly toward the door frame the distance calculated above. Tighten the mounting screw, before adjusting the upper mount toward the door frame the same amount & then reinstall the door and retest.

Door Dragging On Floor

  • Lift The Dragging Door: Elevate the dragging door in order to disconnect the underside hinge pin from the mount, before tilting the door toward the room as well as pull the door out from the upper hinge mount and track. Position the bifold door half through a pair of sawhorses.
  • Measure Up From Bottom Edge Of Each Door: Calculate & compute from the underside edge of each door 1/4 inch and make a pencil mark. Snap a chalk line betwixt the two marks on each edge of the door in order to make a cut line.
  • Sand The Bottom Edge Of The Door: Line up a circular saw blade with the lower edge of the cut line before cutting off 1/4 inch from the underside of each of the two sections of the bifold door. Sand the underside edge of the door in order to get rid of any rough spots.
  • Reinstall The Bifold Door: Reinstall the bifold door into the upper hinge and track before opening as well as closing the door in order to check. Repeat the same procedure with the other half of the bifold door, if required.
