How To Add Padding To Wood Headboard: Step By Step Process Of Adding The Padding

Step By Step Process Of Adding The Padding To Wooden Headboard

The padded wooden headboards are not only fashionable but are also the more comfortable backrest. With just little effort, the user can easily transform the piece of plywood or smooth interior door into an upholstered piece. The simple steps for adding the padding to wooden headboard are as follows:
  • Kraft Paper: The first step is to lay down a large piece of kraft paper on the floor and then place the headboard on the top of it. Alternatively, tape down the old newspapers together for making a large sheet of paper. After that trace down the outline of the wooden headboard on the paper, with the help of a soft pencil or felt-tipped marker.
  • Mark The Extra 6 To 12 Inches: All around the traced outline simply mark the extra 6 to 12 inches, using the contours of the outline as a guide as this will help to allow for wrapping the padding as well as the fabric around to the back of the wooden headboard. Using the scissors cut out the pattern.
  • Foam Rubber Padding: After the above step is done then lay down the foam rubber padding-right on the floor and then place the pattern over it.
  • Cut Out The Foam: Draw all around the pattern using a felt-tipped marker and cut out the foam with the help of scissors or sharp utility knife.
  • Quilt Batting: Place the quilt batting on the floor and then using the pattern as a guide draw and at the same time cut out a piece of it, just as with the piece of foam.
  • Fabric On The Floor: Now place the fabric on the floor, and then draw and cut out a piece of it in the same way as did with foam and batting.
  • Spray Adhesive: Stand the wooden headboard with a wall or heavy table in a garage or simply outside. After that slightly coat the surface with the help of a spray adhesive. Now line up the cut foam on the wooden headboard and press it down into the place. For wrapping to the back leave an even margin all around.
  • Turn: Flip the headboard over and wrap down the excess foam on the back of the headboard and then staple it evenly on the backside, with the help of a staple gun and the 1/2-inch staples. Press firmly to ensure that the staples seat themselves hard through the foam as well as in the wood.
  • Spray The Adhesive: Finally spray the adhesive on the foam and then press, wrap as well as staple the batting into the right place in the same way as with the foam. For the batting and fabrics, use 1/4-inch or shorter staples. Pull up all the edges slightly beyond the foam edge right on the back, this will help to avoid the staple through it again. Repeat the same process with the fabric that is on the batting. Stretch the fabric and smooth out all wrinkles.

Tips

  • To install the buttons on the padded headboard, simply drill holes at the desired locations before padding the wooden headboard. After the padding and fabric are in place, then sew the buttons to the front, with the holes to pull the thread tightly through to the back.
  • The hollow-core doors make the good option of headboards when padded, turned sideways as well as fastened to the wall.
