How To Add Beadboard To Cabinet Doors: Step By Step Instruction Of Adding Beadboard To Cabinet Door

Step By Step Instructions Of Adding Beadboard To Cabinet Doors

For more than a century, bead board has been a mainstay of interior decorating. The traditional vertical lines add depth and detail by dividing horizontal surfaces. It looks equally at home as wainscot on kitchen ceilings or behind a chair rail. Bead board offers doors and end panels on cabinets a traditional look. It is an easy and affordable technique to give kitchen cabinets a new look. Purchase your bead board in either unfinished wood grain for stained cabinets or primed white for painted cabinets.

Things You'll Need

  • Bead board
  • Tape Measure
  • Circular Saw Or Jigsaw
  • Construction Adhesive
  • Sandpaper & Clamps
  • Paint Or Stain

Step 1: Measure The Dimensions Of Your Cabinet Door

  • The size of your cabinet door should be measured. The inset panel's horizontal and vertical measurements are required. In your measurement, omit all routered details. If there is a design on the door frame, only measure to the lowest edge of the pattern.

Step 2: Remove Your Door And Take Off Any Pulls Or Handles

  • Remove your door and any handles and pulls. Carefully hold the weight of the door as you unscrew the hinges from the rear or edge of it. The door must be separated from itself by removing the screws from the back of the door. To prevent losing them, insert the screws into the handle's corresponding holes.

Step 3: Sand The Face Of The Door

  • Place the door on a level, stable surface and clamp it down. To ensure good adherence, use a belt sander to sand the door's face until the top glossy layer of the paint or finish is worn through.

Step 4: Apply A Generous Bead Of Construction Adhesive To The Door Panel

  • Using a circular or table saw, cut a piece of bead board to the size of the inset panel on your door. The edges are smoothed. The door panel should have a generous bead of construction adhesive applied all the way around, about 12 to 34 inch from the edge. Any area of the panel's center that is on the same level as the adhesive should be covered.

Step 5: Place The Bead Board Panel On The Adhesive

  • With the beaded side facing up, place the bead board panel on the adhesive. To embed the bead board in the glue, apply pressure and move the piece just a little bit from side to side. The edges should be aligned before being C-clamped till dry.

Step 6: Apply Stain And Finish Or Paint

  • Before reattaching the hardware, stain, polish, and/or paint the wood in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. If you wish to match the existing finish, you should probably repaint or stain the entire door face. The additional thickness may require longer screws for handles and pulls. For the best results, bring the old ones with you to the hardware store and attempt to find a perfect match for head style and threading.
