Steps to Prepare & Use Homemade Varnish Remover

Varnish refers to a topcoat that is applied over the wooden surfaces such as flooring and furniture. Varnish gives the wood surfaces protection from damages and also provides the surfaces a glossy finish. Over time, the varnish over the wood surfaces look dull and in order to achieve the glossy look again, the user needs to refinish the surfaces. For refinishing, the basic process is to remove the old varnish from the wood surfaces. The old varnish can be removed with harsh toxic chemical removers or with a natural homemade varnish remover. The steps to prepare and use natural homemade varnish remover are as follows;
  1. Boil Water: The first step will be to pour 4 cups of water in a pot and boil it over a stove or any other heating object. Once the water boils, the user needs to remove the pot from the heating object and let it sit for about 5 minutes.
  2. Mix Cold Water & Corn-starch: After that, the user needs to mix 1 cup of corn-starch with 1/2 cup of cold water in a container and stir the mixture thoroughly.
  3. Mix Boiled Water, Baking Soda, Ammonia & Vinegar: The next step will be to prepare another mixture. First, the user needs to pour the already prepared boiled water in a bucket and add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, 1/2 cup of ammonia, and 3/4 cup of baking soda into it. It has been recommended to stir the mixture well with a wooden spoon.
  4. Prepare Solution: After that, the user needs to pour cold water & corn-starch mixture into the bucket and then, stir both the mixtures together thoroughly to prepare homemade varnish remover solution.
  5. Apply Solution: The next step will be to apply the prepared solution over the varnished surface by using a paintbrush. It is necessary to apply the hot solution over the varnish for which the user can reheat the solution in a microwave. The solution should be allowed to sit over the varnished surfaces for several minutes before proceeding to the next step.
  6. Scrub The Surfaces: After that, the user needs to scrub the varnished surfaces with hots rags. First, soak clean rags into the hot water and then wring out excess liquid from it before scrubbing the rags over the varnished surfaces. It has been recommended to repeat the steps of applying the solution and scrubbing the surfaces until the wood gets varnish free.
