Holding Glass In Cabinet Doors: Best & Easy Ways Of Installing The Glass In Cabinet Door

Best & Easy Ways Of Installing/Holding The Glass In Cabinet Doors

Many cabinetmakers use silicone for the purpose of glass installation. Silicone will help to provide a shockproof, as well as rattle-proof cushion that will permanently bond the glass to the wood. It is clear, invisible, and also affordable. The best and easy ways of installing or holding the glass in cabinet doors are as follows:

Installing Glass In A Cabinet

  1. The first step is to properly clean the area where the glass will be installed. There will be a channel cut in the perimeter of the opening exactly where the glass will attach. Now carefully scrape the channel out so that it will be completely flat as well as smooth. Now position the new glass in that channel. If in case it will not fit flat, that time scrape, as well as smooth the channel with the help of a chisel until the glass, fits snug as well as is flat. Position something heavy inside the cabinet so that the item will act as a prop to hold up the glass inside the channel.
  2. Now the user needs to cut the tip of a tube of the clear silicone with the help of a utility knife. The tip must be cut slightly in an angled way to open a hole right at the end of the silicone tube about 1/4 inch in the diameter.
  3. After the tube is cut then position the angled side of the silicone tube in one of the corners on top of the glass. Gently keep squeezing the tube until the silicone starts to emerge. Now start sliding the tube from all around the inside of the glass in a way so that the bead of the silicone is equally spread on the glass as well as on the side of the channel. It is normal if the silicone heaps out into a round bead.
  4. Wipe up the bead to smooth it, if required, with the help of a wet fingertip. Silicone is very sticky as well as pliable. Shape it with the fingertip needed. If in case the user will get the silicone on other parts of the cabinet or glass that time scrape it off later. Leave the silicone to dry for about 24 hours before removing the prop that holds the glass.

Installing Glass In A New Cabinet Door

  1. Position the cabinet door on a flat surface like table keeping the face down. Set a clamp right at both ends as well as tighten them to secure the door to the table.
  2. Now into a router install a 1/4-by-3/8-inch rabbet bit with bearing. The user must be looking at a rectangular or square wooden frame where the glass will be installed. Hold the router using both of the hands. To turn it on pull the trigger. Gently ease the bit in the side of the wooden frame. Once the bit starts to work, the bearing that is on the bottom will glide all along the edge to stabilize the cut.
  3. Push as well as pull the router, sliding it all around the inside of the perimeter of the door in the clockwise direction until the starting point of the cut met. This will help to create a channel that is 1/4-inch deep and 3/8-inch wide right on the inside edge of the frame. Now scrape the inside of the new channel with the help of a chisel to remove any of the loose fibers or the debris so that the glass will lay flat on the inside of the frame.
  4. After that, the user needs to measure the distance that is between the sides of the groove from both the directions for height and the width. It is advisable to subtract about 1/8 inch from each of the measurements and then order the glass of the exact dimension. To prevent binding glass is slightly smaller than the opening.
  5. Position the glass right inside the channel. Make sure that it fits flat right inside the channel. If not, then scrape the channel with the help of a chisel until the glass lays flat. Finally, attach using the silicon as mentioned in the above method.
