Two Easy Ways To Fill Cracks Or Holes In Exterior Wood Before Painting

It is highly possible that the wood can be very easily damaged that as a result will create a large crack or hole. Regardless of whether the crack or hole is in a wooden wall or a piece of furniture, then you can easily repair it with the help of some craft sticks and wood filler, which are the two best ways to do the job. Both the ways are mentioned below, go through both the ways carefully & achieve your desired result:

Way 1: Craft Sticks

  • Gather The Materials: The first step is to gather the material like solvent-based wood filler and oil-based primer as well as paint if the item is placed outdoors. You will also need the craft sticks, disposable plates, PVA glue, 120-grit sandpaper, wood glue, and the paintbrushes or rollers.
  • Glue Craft Sticks: In order to cover up the hole together glue down the craft sticks. The craft sticks will provide support for applying the wood filler. It is important to inspect the size of the hole and then decide how many craft sticks will be needed to cover it. For instance, if a hole can be filled down by 4 craft sticks, then lay them on the flat surface side by side. Simply pour wood glue on the back of the 4 craft sticks. Place 4 other craft sticks on top of the first 4 which is glued as this will create a strong layer that is stuck together strongly.
  • Place The Craft: Now its time to place the craft sticks on the backside of the hole and secure the sticks with the help of wood glue. Apply the glue all around the border of the hole. Lay down the craft sticks on the side from which they won't be seen from.

Way 2: Wood Filler

  • Mix The Wood Filler: Mix the wood filler with the help of a craft stick on a disposable paper plate. Follow the instructions on the wood filler. The directions vary that is entirely dependent on the manufacturer. It's advisable not to mix a large amount of wood filler. A small amount of wood filler will do the job. Once the filler turns orange-brown in color means it is fully mixed.
  • Apply The Wood Filler: Once the wood filler is mixed well, apply it quickly. Apply the wood filler to the affected area with another craft stick or with a putty knife. The wood filler should be level with the rest of the area and even as well.
  • Let Filler Dry: Leave the filler to dry for almost an hour before sanding with the 120-grit sandpaper on it. After the filler is dry, start rubbing it with 120-grit sandpaper. You need to apply a fair amount of pressure while rubbing the filler using the sandpaper. Keep sanding as long as it's flush with the rest of the wood.
  • Cleaning: After completing all the above steps, then take a cloth to clean the area and remove all the sanding dust. You might need to wipe the area for a couple of times if the hole is large or if a lot of filler is used.
