Ultimate & Easy Steps To Build Coffee Table Using Lift Top

The coffee table with a lift top allows the user for bringing the table up at the perfect height for dining in front of the television or bringing the laptop up to a good position. If you wish to build a coffee table using lift top yourself, then simply go through all the steps mentioned below carefully:
  1. Aluminum Tubing: The user needs to start the project by making the legs out of 3/4" aluminum tubing. It is a good option to use aluminum because it's soft enough to cut with the ordinary woodworking saw blades.
  2. Chamfer: Once the aluminum tubing edges are cut then chamfer the edges of it, this will help to allow a channel for the brazing material. After this, it's very important that the aluminum is cleaned before heading to the next step.
  3. Soldering: The user needs to clamp up the aluminum tubing and then heat it with a propane torch. The brazing rod will melt at around 700 degrees so the user needs to hot the aluminum enough to melt the rod without melting the tubing it usually takes 4 to 5 minutes for heating the tubing. The user will know when it's hot enough once the rod starts to melt on contact spots. Rub-down the brazing rod all along the channel until it's filled in and finishing it off with the help of some more heat.
  4. Sand, Prime, And Paint: The next step is to sand the aluminum legs so that the primer and paint will adhere to the surface strongly. After the sanding is done wipe the surface with a cloth, then spray the primer & let the primer dry completely then go for the paint, the user can spray the flat black paint to the legs. However, it depends on the user which color they opt for.
  5. Cut The Plywood: Now, its time to cut down all the plywood pieces to width and length.
  6. Crosscutting: Without tear-out crosscut the plywood. Crosscutting the plywood with a combination blade always results in tear-out. The best and the easiest way to prevent it is to just cover the plywood using painters tape.
  7. Rip Thin Strips: In order to cover up all the exposed edges of the plywood the user needs some 1/16th inch thick walnut from which rip 3/4 inch strips. They can also use a 3/4" thick walnut board and then rip very thin strips off or can even purchase a pre-made walnut edge banding.
  8. Edge Banding: After the above step is done now glue down edge banding to the exposed edges of the plywood and use a clamp to secure it down with painters tape.
  9. Glue The Panels: From the top side, use the painters tape to mark the inset. This will help to protect the wood from the glue that can squeeze-out. Add some of the glue to all the bottom of the pieces and then secure them in place with the help of the blue tape.
  10. Add Screw For Strength: Let the glue to set and dry for a bit, then flip the panels over and then add some screws for extra reinforcement. Gluing it before tapping the screws allows for perfect placement. After this add corner accents simply with the gluing and taping them in right place.
  11. Screw Legs To Panel: For the legs just drill holes and then screw them in place. Use the pocket hole screws because of their large head they hold the legs to the frame strongly.
  12. Rockler Lift-Top Mechanism: For the rockler lift mechanism secure it inside and then use the same screws as above to secure it in place.
  13. Screw On Lift Top: The easiest and the best way to attach the top is to place it and then slowly lift it up and allowing the mechanism to raise up with it. It's important to make sure that the wood doesn't slip, clamp it and screw it in place.
  14. Finishing Touch: At last finish with applying boiled linseed Oil and polyurethane and add rubber feet and bumpers.
