Distressing Wood With Vinegar And Baking Soda: Steps To Distress

Steps To Distress Wood With Vinegar And Baking Soda

Wood can be distressed with vinegar and baking soda by following the below-given steps:
  1. Make Necessary Preparations:
Before starting the distressing process, the user needs to make the necessary preparations such as placing the wood on a sawhorse so that both its sides are exposed during the process. Also, the user needs to sand the wood down if it has already been finished in order to expose the untreated wood. The sanding dust should be removed from the wood as well.
  2. Prepare Baking Soda Paste:
After that, the user needs to prepare a baking soda paste by mixing water and baking soda in equal parts. First, the user needs to fill a medium-sized bucket with baking soda and pour some water into it. Then, the user needs to stir the mixture thoroughly with a spoon in order to create a paste having a medium thickness that can be applied with a paintbrush.
  3. Apply Paste Onto The Wood:
The next step will be to apply the baking soda paste on to the wood. It has been recommended by the experts to create a thick layer of paste on to the wood surface. The user can add extra water or baking soda to the paste during the step in order to adjust its thickness.
  4. Apply Vinegar:
In order to speed up the distressing process, the user needs to spray vinegar on to the wood containing baking soda paste. It has been recommended by the experts to let the vinegar sit on the wood for 10 minutes before taking it off from the wood. Alternatively, the user can leave the wood containing a thick layer of baking soda paste in sun for all day in order to get better results without using vinegar.
  5. Scrub The Wood:
The next step will be to scrub the wood with a wire brush in order to remove baking soda paste from the wood. In order to give the wood more aged look, the user needs to press the brush harder to scuff up the wood.
  6. Wipe The Wood Down:
After scrubbing, the user needs to wipe down the wood with a clean rag dampened with water. It has been recommended to wipe down the wood in the direction of the wood grain. The user needs to wipe the wood until all the traces of baking soda are removed from it.
  7. Dry The Wood:
The last step will be to remove as much moisture as possible from the wood with a clean cloth. After that, the user needs to let the wood dry naturally. The entire process can be repeated to age the wood more.
