Easy Way To Convert File Cabinet Into Stylish Dresser

Mostly found in a used office furniture store, the filing(file) cabinet finds new use as a dresser. The spacious drawers of the filing cabinet can hold a great deal of weight and a lot of items can be stored in it and many of the file cabinets are made with a safety feature that helps to prevent more than one drawer from being pulled out at a time. If you want to convert your file cabinet into a stylish dresser, then you simply need to follow the below-mentioned step by step way:
  1. Cleaning: Start the process by cleaning the file cabinet completely. The user needs to scrape away any of the old labels with the help of a single razor blade. If necessary the user can use adhesive remover solution.
  2. Use Masking Tape: The next step is to apply the masking tape carefully to cover up the handles. Cutaway all the excess tape with the help of a razor blade or with a craft knife. Place one of the pieces of masking tape on to the top of the cabinet and straight down to the front at least 3 inches away from both sides of the handles. This will help to serve as a guide for the stripe of paint.
  3. Paint: Now in this step the user needs to paint the space that is between the masking tape guides with spray paint as these will be the racing stripes. Spray the paint more lightly near the masking tape guides. Leave the paint to dry completely. After that, if necessary add an additional coat before removing the masking tape guides.
  4. Make A Strip: The next step is to make a strip of paper as wide as the handles and should be long enough that will cover the front as well as top of the file cabinet. Fix the paper to the file cabinet with the help of masking tape, covering all the handles and continue wrapping it on the top of the cabinet in a single continuous piece. Once the paper is in place, add few small pieces of tape but right next to the masking tape on both sides of the paper. These will help to serve as guides for making the spacing of the width of outer stripes, in order to mask off the outer stripes the user needs to place another long strip of tape but on the outsides of the spacing guides .
  5. Spray: Remove the spacing guides then spray the file cabinet with the main color of choice. Paint down the drawers from all the visible sides only except the interior and drawer bottom. After paint job is dry remove all the masking tape.
  6. Use Steel Wool: To remove any paint dust and build-up use steel wool. Dust the entire project with the help of lightly damp paper towel as this will remove any sanding residue.
  7. Shelf Liner: At last cut as well as attach self-adhesive shelf liner on the bottom as well as the back of drawers to cover up all the pre-made holes.
