Can You Paint A Stainless Steel Sink: Easy Ways Of Painting A Stainless Steel Sink

Easy Ways Of Painting A Stainless Steel Sink

If you have a stainless steel sink in your kitchen area at home that is looking dull and you want to paint it and make it look new again, then go through some of the ways mentioned below carefully:

Rough Up

As a general rule, you don't want to apply paint directly onto the finished surface of your polished stainless steel because it will never bond with the sink surface. But if you are going to deal with a surface like a countertop stainless that has infinite scuff marks from many years of use, you will be fine but if not then you will need to rent a sanding machine and scuff the sink surface of the metal so that the paint will actually have something to bond to.

Cleaning And Prep

Next, you need to be sure that the roughed-up surface of your sink is completely clean & free of dirt, debris, and grease so that the applied paint will bond properly. Plain and simple old soap and clean water won’t cut it here and you need to use a degreaser and a specialized steel cleaner. Follow the manufacturer's guidance for drying times on any cleaners which you used.

Primer Coats

Now you have to coat your stainless steel sink with a layer of your primer before you can apply the final coat of your selected paint in the color that you want the most. The primer coats also have special bonding agents that will help them keep paint on the sink surface. Any type of primer which is specially rated for use with stainless steel sink and your chosen final paint will do. Most of the paint manufacturers have primers that have been specially designed for use with your finish paint, so for the best results, you need to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the different brands. In order to get an even coat, you need to use a spraying machine instead of a paintbrush because it will leave ridges behind.

Application

Again, you will achieve the smoothest results of your hard work if you use a paint sprayer to apply your final layer of paint on top of your primer coat once it has dried adequately. If you like the ridges and roughness that any paintbrush provides then feel free to use that for the application of as for your final color. You can also use your sponge or rag if you are looking for any different textures.

General Tips

While you use a sprayer, hold the sprayer nozzle at least 12 to 18 inches away from the sink surface and then you need to use a wide mist instead than a concentrated stream to avert any drips. If you are working with a paintbrush, you can easily go crazy with your brush strokes which is based on which direction you want the "grain" of your paint to dry wholly. You can also use your paint roller if you have any wide enough surface just roll it on just as you would with any other type of surface.
