  1. Clean The Wood: The first step will be to clean the varnished wood by using any basic household cleaner or trisodium phosphate. The user needs to spray the cleaner over the varnished wood surface and then wipe it with a clean rag by running it in circular motions. In case of stubborn residue and dirt, the user needs to spray the area and then scrub it by using a scouring pad. Before using the cleaner, it is necessary to check the label instructions to ensure the cleaner is safe to use over the surface.
  2. Fill In The Imperfections The next step will be to fill in the imperfections and cracks in the surface with wood putty. First, the user needs to scoop up a small amount of wood putty with a putty knife and spread it over the imperfections and cracks by applying consistent pressure. Then, the user needs to spread the wood putty evenly over the imperfections by using a scraper that is larger in size than the imperfections. Let the wood putty dry for about 30 - 90 minutes or as per the label instructions before proceeding forward.
  3. Sand The Surface: Once the wood putty dries completely, the user needs to sand even the surface using 120 - 200 grit sandpaper. The user can hand sand the surface or use a sander for effortless sanding. It has been recommended by the experts to sand the surface in circular motions until the surface gets leveled smooth surface. After sanding, it is necessary to wipe down the sanding dust and debris by using a damp rag.
  4. Apply Primer: The next step will be to apply primer over the clean & dry surface by using a paintbrush or a paint roller as per the requirements. It has been recommended by the experts to use a water-based primer so that the paint sticks thoroughly over the surface. The user needs to apply an even solid coat of primer over the surface in long strokes and if required, the user can apply a second coat of primer as well. The primer should be allowed to dry completely before proceeding to the next step.
  5. Apply Paint: After that, apply paint over the primed surface by using a paint roller or a paintbrush. It has been recommended by the experts to use water-based paint as it provides a shiny appearance and dries pretty quickly. The user needs paint over the surface in long and wide strokes making sure to cover the entire surface. The user needs not to use oil-based paint over the varnished wood as it will not absorb into the wood properly. The paint coat should be allowed to dry for about 30-60 minutes before adding 1-2 more coats of paint to achieve the desired look.
  6. Apply Varnish: The last step will be to allow the paint dry overnight before applying an even coat of water-based varnish over the surface. The varnish will give the wood a shiny appearance and a durable finish. Apply a varnish coat by using a paintbrush or a roller and let it dry as per the label instructions. Once the varnish dries, the wood surface is ready to be used again.
