Broken Office Chair: Easy Steps To Repair

Steps to Repair a Broken Office Chair

After several months or years, an office chair can break under normal usage. Mostly, the armrests of an office chair break at the sides. In order to repair the broken armrests of an office chair, the user needs to follow the below-given steps;
  1. Gather Required Materials: Before beginning the repair process, it is necessary to gather all the required tools and materials such as a small drill with 2.5 mm drill bit, a pair of pliers, an epoxy, and a metal coat hanger.
  2. Unscrew Broken Armrests: After that, the user needs to unscrew the broken armrests from an office chair that are usually attached with hex screws.
  3. Cut Metal Hanger Piece: The next step will be to cut a metal hanger in a 30cm piece or as per the requirement. The metal hanger is usually covered with a plastic that needs to be peeled off before usage.
  4. Drill Holes: After that, the user needs to attach the2.5 mm bit to a drill and make a few holes around the broken area as per requirement. It has been recommended to leave some space in between broken section & holes and in between each hole. If the user tries to make holes close to the broken section or close to the other hole, it will result in further breakage.
  5. Make Metal Staples: The next step is to make metal staples out of a hanger. First, the user needs to cut the metal hanger in several pieces as per the requirements and then bend each piece in a shape of the staple by using a pair of pliers. It has been recommended to make the staples a tad smaller than the distance between the opposite holes so that the staples fit strong & tight.
  6. Prepare & Apply Epoxy: After that, the user needs to prepare epoxy by mixing it in equal parts followed by applying the epoxy to the broken ends of the armrests. Once the ends are epoxied, the user needs to attach them together followed by tying the rope around and tightening it with a screwdriver. The step will help the user to squeeze epoxy and hold the ends tightly together.
  7. Use Staples:
    The next step will be to insert metal staples into the opposite ends of the broken area followed by bending the staples to hold into position. The excess metal wire needs to be cut by using a pair of pliers.
  8. Apply Epoxy Again: After that, the user needs to apply more epoxy to the broken area and around the staples. The epoxy should be left untouched for 12 hours to cure the broken area.
  9. Screw Repaired Armrests: The last step will be to screw the repaired armrests back to the office chair with a suitable tool before putting the chair to use again.
