Bookcase Leaning To One Side: Steps & Items Needed To Balance A Leaning Bookcase

Steps & Items Needed To Balance A Leaning Bookcase

If you see that your bookcase is leaning to one side and you want to fix or balance it anyhow then you just need to collect all the required items and follow some simple steps. Here is the list of required items and steps for this process. Follow the steps carefully to get the desired result of your work:

Things Needed

  • Stud Finder & Cordless Drill/Driver
  • Level & Rubber Mallet
  • 4 Woodblocks, 3/4-By-3-By-3 Inches
  • 3/16-Inch Drill Bit
  • Glue & 1-1/4-Inch Screws
  • Wood Sticks, 3/4-By-3/4-By-4 Inches
  • 2-1/2-Inch Screws

Steps For This Process

  • First of all, you need to run your stud finder above your bookcase for finding any wall studs that run perpendicular behind your bookcase. You need to mark all the stud locations so that you will be able to see them above your bookcase.
  • Now you need to remove the books from your bookcase. Try to reach into your bookcase by using a drill/driver and moderately unscrew any screws that may be attaching your bookcase to your wall but remember don't take the screws out, all you need to do is loosen them slightly.
  • Next stand a level on the side of your bookcase. If the level shows that your bookcase is leaning to one side, then you need to tap on the side of your bookcase by using a rubber mallet until your bookcase is level properly. If it still won't stay in place then you need to tighten all the screws slightly and then you need to tap on the case until it stays in level properly. When your case is level you have to tighten all the screws as tight as possible.
  • Now it' time to drill at least four holes through with the face of each one of the 3/3 blocks. Simply space them equally by using a 3/16-inch drill bit & cordless drill.
  • The next thing is to spread a bit of glue on the blocks by using your fingertip. Next, you need to place 1 block in each corner at the top of your bookcase. You just need to place 1 behind the face frame on the front side & one at the backside, directly opposite the first one. The glue side of your blocks will be flat against the sides of your bookcase. Just tap your blocks hard into the corners. One side of your blocks should be flush with the bottom side of your bookcase top & with the other side of your block flush with the case vertically.
  • Now you need to place 1-1/4-inch screws in all the holes & screw your blocks to the insides of your bookcase.
  • The next thing is to drill 2 holes through with one side of your 3/4-by-3/4-inch sticks. Space them equally. These sticks are the cleats. Rotate your cleats 1/4 turn and then you need to drill one more hole that centered in the stick. Now, place a 2-1/2-inch screw in the single hole and then place two 1-1/4-inch screws in the 2 holes on the same side of your cleat.
  • Now you need to place one cleat under your top shelf. The side with the single hole & screw needed to be facing out and centered over your stud nearest the center of your bookcase. You now need to use your screw gun for driving the 2-1/2-inch screw into your stud crosswise.
  • Try to reach under your cleat and then you need to drive your two 1-1/4-inch screws up perpendicular into the bottom of your shelf.
  • Finally, screw your cleats to all the shelves in the same way as you do before.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always be aware that your corner blocks will protrude slenderly the interior of your bookcase on the side & that books will easily touch the cleats on top if they are tall enough & will not slide back all the way where a cleat has been used.
  • You can also add as many cleats to as many shelves as required until your bookcase is stable properly.
